Dr. Edward S. Linn, Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of Women’s Health

Dr. Topel is recognized locally and statewide by his peers as a pioneer and leader in the advancement of major gynecologic laparoscopic surgery. He was the first in the Chicagoland area to perform a laparoscopic hysterectomy and has developed a special interest and skill in fibroid removal and minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Jonathan Somers is director of Cardiac Surgery at Rush and treats complex diseases of the heart ranging from heart valve replacements to aneurysms and dissections. Board certified in Cardiovascular and Vascular Surgery, Dr. Somers is also an assistant professor of surgery at Rush Medical College. Areas of expertise include beating heart bypass surgery, also called off-pump coronary artery bypass, traditional bypass surgery, minimally invasive treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysms, major thoracic surgery for lung cancer and other pulmonary diseases, trauma surgery, and vascular surgery.

Dr. Philip Krause, Section Director of Cardiology
Dr. Philip Krause is board certified in Cardiology/Cardiovascular Disease as well as Interventional Cardiology and Internal Medicine. Dr. Krause directs Rush North Shore’s cath lab, one of only six Chicago-area hospitals to offer breakthrough, drug-eluting stents to patients who qualify for this life-saving procedure. He specializes in balloon and laser angioplasty, Doppler flow guidewire and all intracoronary stents. As Assistant Professor of Medicine at Rush Medical College, Dr. Krause lectures and leads many protocol studies.

Dr. Jose Velasco, Chairman of Surgery and Director of the
Wound Care Center
Dr. Jose Velasco is a general and oncological surgeon who uses a holistic team approach to the surgical treatment of cancer. As Director of the Wound Care Center, he has been instrumental in implementing an innovative treatment as well as study protocol in platelet gel to heal stubborn, chronic wounds. Other specialties include lapararscopic techniques for surgery including the treatment of colon, gallbladder disease and appendicitis. Dr. Velasco is board certified in both general surgery and surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery and served as an instructor in Advanced Trauma Life Support. He has received many awards including the Pfizer Pharmaceutical Grant for research in surgical infections. As a native of Valladolid, Spain, Dr. Velasco has practiced medicine both in Spain and the United States.

Dr. Goldstein is a noted specialist in hip and knee reconstruction surgery including total joint replacement and sports medicine. Dr. Goldstein is an innovator in minimum incision total hip surgical procedures and has designed instruments for this technique which are used in the US, Canada and Europe. Founder and president of the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, Dr. Goldstein is board certified in Orthopedic Surgery and has treated many athletes and sports personalities. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and also of the American Rheumatism Association.
