Cardiac Stress Tests
The Rush North Shore Heart Station provides cardiovascular stress testing to detect underlying heart disease, such as blocked coronary arteries or the risk of a serious heart attack. The stress test evaluates the heart and vascular system during exercise, where patients are placed on a treadmill. For those unable to walk on the treadmill, we offer pharmacological testing.
The following stress tests are available seven days a week at Rush North Shore:
- Thallium Stress Test
- Persantine Thallium Stress Test
- Dobutamine Thallium Stress Test
Other tests performed in the Heart Station include:
- electrocardiograms (EKGs) to monitor heart rhythm
- 30-day heart activity recorders
- 24-hour Holter monitors.
Echocardiograms
Echocardiograms utilize ultrasound technology to examine the heart. Echos provide a one-dimensional (or M-mode) view of the heart's chambers for accurate measurement; and a two-dimensional (or 2-D) look at the beating heart, including the chambers, valves and major blood vessels that exit the left and right ventricles.
Tests performed in the Echocardiography Lab include:
- echocardiograms
- stress echoes
- transesophageal echocardiograms
Rush North Shore also offers a non-invasive test employing CT scanning technology to determine levels of calcification on coronary arteries.
Vascular Tests
Vascular tests diagnose blood clots or deep vein thrombosis, vascular disease and carotid artery disease. These non-invasive tests utilize ultrasound technology to evaluate arteries and the vascular system.
At Rush North Shore our echocardiography lab and our noninvasive vascular laboratory are accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories.
